Enter the Standard dilution. Generally the activity of the standard solution is too high to
measure in a well counter without dilution. A 1 to 100 dilution means that 1 part of standard
solution is mixed with 99 parts of non radioactive solution for a diluted solution of 1%. A 1 to
50 dilution is a 2% solution, and so on. The aliquot volume is the volume used for the
samples counted in the well counter, and should not exceed the useful counting dimensions
of the well. An aliquot sample volume of 4 ml is a good sample volume for the well detector
provided with the CAPTUS
®
2000 system. The aliquot volume must be the same for both the
patient’s sample and the standard solution sample.
Enter the counting time in seconds. Counting time should be sufficiently long to allow 10,000
cumulative counts. 300 seconds is usually sufficient for adequate counts of low activity urine
samples. These default settings will appear on the patient add screen, Figure 8-4 below. If
no default settings are entered through Setup, then standard dilution, aliquot volume, and
counting time will appear blank on the patient add screen. Once the default settings have
been correctly entered, choose the
DONE button the save the data and return to Figure 8-2.
To exit without saving any values for default settings, choose the CANCEL button and return
to Figure 8-2.
Adding Patients
Before performing a Schilling Test, first enter patient demographic data into the patient
library. Select the
ADD button from the bottom of the Schilling Test main screen. Figure 8-4
will appear.
