5.2.3. PTO shaft
DANGER
The PTO shaft coupled with a tractor, is a
mechanical part which, when in use, might be
extremely dangerous for the physical integrity
of people operating in its area.
Therefore it is necessary to pay lot of attention to
the operations related to this mechanical organ.
Read carefully the instructions manual of the PTO
shaft attached to it. In case of doubts regarding its
functioning, or if it is damaged or worn out or
broken or without its protections, replace it
exclusively with original PTO shafts marked «CE»
since equipped with a specific device related to
the machine.
The PTO shaft is fitted with a torque limiter which
has the purpose of preserving the machine from
peaks during operation; use the torque limiter on
the round baler side.
Do not make modifications and adaptations to the
PTO shaft. If this becomes necessary, contact the
service center of the manufacturer.
Stop the engine, remove the key from the tractor
control panel and verify that all rotating parts have
stopped before approaching the machine or
perform maintenance operations.
To remove the PTO shaft in use and set a new
one it is necessary:

Make sure of the weight of the PTO shaft
transmission and in case get suitable lifting
and transport devices

Stop the tractor and the PTO shaft

Remove the ignition keys of the tractor

Unhook the chain from the tractor side

Pull out the PTO shaft from the tractor side
and hold it with suitable support

Unhook the chain from the machine side

Open the cover of the protection from the
machine side (the one fixed on the adaptor
box)

Unscrew the tightening nut of the PTO shaft
from the machine side and remove the
tightening pin

Pull out the PTO shaft from the machine side
To install a new PTO shaft, proceed as follows:

Clean and grease the PTO shaft both from
the machine and the tractor side in order to
facilitate the installation of the PTO shaft

Insert the PTO shaft on the machine side

Insert the tightening pin and screw the related
nut

Fix the cover of the protection from the
machine side

Hook the chain from the machine side

Insert the plug of the PTO shaft into the PTO
of the tractor

The device has to hook (see use instructions
of the PTO shaft)

Hook the chain from the tractor side
Since the PTO shaft is an organ which rotates at
high speed, in the testing phase it is subjected to
balancing and any later intervention can cause
imbalances that may affect the functionality of the
machine itself as well as the integrity of the PTO
shaft.
Do not use the PTO shaft as a support or
footboard.
The working angle that of the PTO shaft should
be as low as possible (max. 70 °), this grants a
longer life to the shaft as well as to the baler.
When the PTO shaft is stretched at most, in every
working condition, the telescopic pipes must
overlap for at least 1/3 of their length (Fig. 16, A).

When fully inserted, the minimum clearance must
be 4 cm (Fig. 16, B). If this is not possible, each
half of the PTO shaft has to be shortened to the
same length.
The shortening of the PTO shaft has to be done
by a skilled workshop only.
Once shorted, the coupling of the two halves of
the PTO shaft has to be at least 1/3 of their
length. In order to shorten the PTO shaft, it is
necessary to:
