NOTE:
Additives such as anticoagulants from
collection tubes may contribute to the
measured osmolality. Particulate matter—
normally eliminated by centrifugation in
blood or centrifugation/filtration in urine—
may cause premature crystallization.
Plasma obtained with lithium and sodium
heparin tubes is suitable for osmolality testing
on Advanced Instruments osmometers. EDTA
K3 tubes are not recommended.
WARNING:
Handle all biohazardous materials
per established good laboratory practices and
follow your institution’s exposure control plan.
Persons handling human blood and body fluid
samples must be trained in bloodborne
hazards and observe universal precautions.
Universal precautions are an approach to
infection control, where all human blood and
body fluids are treated as if known to be
infectious. Use personal protective equipment
such as gloves, gowns, etc., to prevent
exposure. Store biohazardous materials in
regulated waste containers and dispose of
these materials in a safe and acceptable
manner in compliance with all country, state
and local requirements.
IMPORTANT:
Do not test samples until controls and/or
reference solutions yield values in the expected range.
5.2 Pre-testing Checklist
Before initiating a test sequence, complete the following
tasks:
1.
Configure testing access if you want user IDs and/or
sample IDs required to run a test (see
).
2.
Make sure that the waste bottle has sufficient
capacity to store the cleaning fluid from the test run.
3.
Make sure that there is sufficient system fluid to clean
the pipettor after each test.

Small Volume Inserts (p/n 552923)
5.3 Configuring Automated Testing
To configure testing requirements—requiring sample ID and/or
user ID entry before testing—and the number of replicates per
test, refer to
Configure Testing Access and Replicates
The default number of replicates is two (duplicates) for
both sample tests and control tests.
Advanced Instruments recommends performing
duplicate tests on patient samples.
5.4 Starting an Automated Test
The loading process varies based on whether user IDs
and/or sample IDs are required for testing (see
Configure Testing Access and Replicates
This example uses the default setting of two replicates
(tests) per sample. You can perform up to 10 replicates
per sample.
NOTE:
