Lifting and Carrying the Instrument Safely
One adult should be able to safely lift and carry the
instrument within a reasonable distance.
If you need to manually lift and carry the instrument,
follow these instructions:
1.
Make sure the path to the instrument’s destination is
flat, dry, and free of debris and obstacles.
2.
Stand as close to the back of the box as possible in
order to minimize stress on your back when you lift
the instrument.
3.
Bend your knees and keep your upper body upright
so your legs do the lifting rather than your back.
Look straight ahead and keep your back straight and
shoulders back so you have a slight arch in your lower
back.
4.
From the rear of the instrument, reach your arms
around each side of the instrument so each hand is
on the bottom-front of the instrument.
5.
Get a good grip on the instrument and lift it from the
box using your legs.
6.
If a cart is not available to transport the instrument:
a.
Keep the instrument close to your body with your
elbows at your sides.
b.
Take small steps and walk slowly with the
instrument, using your feet to change direction.
c.
As you change direction, lead with your hips and
keep your shoulders in line with your hip
movement.
7.
Once you reach the destination, slowly lower the
instrument by lowering your legs.
Keep your head up, stomach muscles tight, and the
instrument close to your body.
