User Manual 3153
Using The Instrument 3-1
Chapter 3
USING The INSTRUMENT
Overview
This chapter contains information about how to operate the Model 3153.
Unlike bench-type instruments, the Model 3153 must be programmed to
turn on functions, change parameters and configure various operating
modes. Two graphical interfaces are available for programming the
instrument: VXIbus Plug&Play and WaveCAD. LabWindows/CVI drivers
and a set of SCPI commands are available for the experienced
programmers. SCPI (standard commands for programmable
instruments) commands for the Model 3153 are listed in Table 4-1. This
manual provides information on low-level programming using SCPI
commands only. The following paragraphs describe the various modes
of operation and give examples of how to program the Model 3153 using
SCPI commands.
Inter-Channel
Dependency
The Model 3153 has three output channels. The parameters for each channel
may be set separately and each channel may be operated as an independent
instrument. Alternatively, two or more channels may be linked and
synchronized to operate from one master sample clock, or to start generating
waveform from one trigger input. Parameters, waveforms and operating modes
are totally independent for each channel. However, in places where inter-
channel dependency (synchronization) is required, channel 1 must be
programmed as master, while channels 2 and/or 3 may become slaves.
Inter-channel dependency is available in one of these configurations:
1) Channel 1 master, channel 2 slave, channel 3 free-running;
2) Channel 1 master, channel 3 slave, channel 2 free-running;
3) Channel 1 master, channels 2 and 3 slaves
Programming the 3153 for one of the above configurations does not
mean that all channels will start generating the same functions and
waveforms. The idea is that, in this mode, all channels will a) start
generating waveforms when one flag is set true (master trigger) and b)
will advance waveforms from one clock source (master clock). Aside
from common trigger advance and clock source, the rest of the
parameters can be programmed independently for each channel.
