Using The Instrument 3-43
Fast Binary Segment
Table Download
As was discussed above, there are two methods of downloading and
dividing the waveform memory: 1) ASCII download and 2) Fast binary
download.
The traditional ASCII method of downloading one waveform at a time in
inefficient in cases where multiple waveforms have to be loaded in the
shortest possible time.
There are provisions built into the Model 3153 that allow fast binary
downloads of waveform data. Using this method, the memory is first
loaded with one long waveform that is made of many smaller waveforms,
then, using fast binary access, the segment table is downloaded to the
generator through a DMA port. The segment table contains start
address and size information for each segment.
The procedure is as follows:
1. Externally, combine your waveforms to one long waveform. Convert
your ASCII data to binary format as shown in Figure 3-9 above.
2. Use the commands below to place the 3153 in the right mode to
accept waveform data:
SMEM:TYPE WAVE;:SMEM ON
3. Download your waveform to the generator. Use the program
fragment shown before as an example of programming the 3153 to
download waveform data.
4. The command: SMEM OFF terminates the waveform download
sequence.
5. Prepare the segment table using the format shown in Figure 3-11.
6. Use the commands below to place the 3153 in the right mode to
accept segment table data:
SMEM:TYPE SEG;:SMEM ON
7. Download your segment table to the generator. You can use the
program for downloading waveform data as an example of
programming the 3153 to download segment table data.
8. The command: SMEM OFF terminates the segment table download
sequence.
