3153 User Manual
Getting Started 1-2
Introduction
A detailed functional description is given following the general
description of the features, functions, and options available with the
Model 3153.
The Model 3153 is a VXIbus, single slot C-size 3-channel synthesized
Waveform Generator. It is a high performance waveform generator that
combines three separate and powerful waveform generators in one
small package. Each of the three channels can operate as a separate
waveform generator; having its own independent sample clock, trigger
input, waveform memory and sequence generator. In applications where
two or more channels must output synchronized waveforms, channel 1
takes control over slave channels 2, 3 or both.
In master-slave configuration, all three channels generate waveforms
from one sample clock source and start from one trigger source. The
master-slave mode ensures that all waveforms that are generated by the
three channels are fully synchronized in terms of frequency and start
phase of the output waveforms. In master-slave mode, the start phase
of each channel may be adjusted relative to the master channel.
The Model 3153 has three output channels. Each channel is completely
independent with its own set of input and output connectors. The
instrument connects through a common VXI ASIC device to the VXIbus
backplane from which it receives commands and waveform data. The
information that is downloaded from the backplane is distributed to the
various channels using 16-bit data and A32 address space. After
loading waveform data and controlling commands to the generator, each
channel can start generating waveforms.
The architecture of the 3153 is such that only channel 1 is allowed to be
programmed as master. Channels 2 and 3 can only be slaves. There
are 4 combinations of which the three channels can operate:
1) Each channel operates as an independent generator;
2) Channel 1 master, channel 2 slave;
3) Channel 1 master, channel 3 slave;
4) Channel 1 master, channels 2 and 3 slaves.
Being a master, channel 1 has a few features that are not available in
the slave units. Channel 1 can output waveforms with up to a 100 MSa/s
clock rate maximum, while the slave channels output waveforms at up to
50 MSa/s. The trigger level input for channel 1 may be programmed,
while the other two channels are sensitive to TTL levels only. Also,
memory options are not the same for all channels. The various memory
options are discussed later in this chapter. The generator, if not ordered
with special memory option, is shipped with the following memory
configuration: channel 1 with 512k, channels 2 and 3 with 2 Meg. Other
memory options are listed below.
