Determine the grain direction of light-weight media
Introduction
For optimal runnability the grain direction is important. When the grain direction of a certain
media is unknown, you must determine the grain direction according to the following procedure.
Procedure
Action

Draw rectangles with the transport direction
in the long edge feed direction and in the
short edge feed direction on a sheet of the
media.

Cut the two rectangles out of the sheet.

Place the two rectangles at the edge of the
table as indicated in the picture.
The rectangle that bends the least has the
highest stiffness. This means that the rectan-
gle that bends the least indicates the grain
direction, because the stiffness along the
grain direction is stronger than in the other
direction.
