In o rd er to com pensate fo r all o f the allow able
m ach in in g variables, a p ro ce d u re o f g ag in g the ca rrie r
and sh im m in g the p in io n has been developed. A fter
g ag in g a carrier, the
assem b ler m ust
install the
a p p ro p ria te shim betw een the drive p in io n sh o u ld er and
re a r b earin g so th a t p in io n d e p th can be adjusted to the
re q u ire d position fo r best to o th contact in each axle
assem bly.

G au g e J - 2 1777-01.
1.
C lean the housing assem bly a n d all gauge parts to
insure accurate m easurem ents.
2.
L ubricate fro n t and re a r p in io n b earin g s w hich will
be used in final assem bly an d p o sitio n them in th eir
respective races in the c a rrier.

For Passenger Car
use clo v erleaf gauge plate
J -2 1779-29 m ounted on p re lo ad stud J -2 1777-
43.

For Truck Models
use c lo v erleaf gauge plate
J -2 1779-36 m ounted on p re lo a d stud J -2 1777-43.

F o r all m odels, in sert stud th ro u g h re a r b earin g
and pilot J -2 1777-35, a n d th ro u g h fro n t b earin g
and pilot J -2 1777-42. Install the hex n u t until
snug and rotate the b ea rin g s to m ake sure they
are p ro p erly seated. See figures 18B and 19B fo r
illu stratio n o f p ro p e r p o sitioning.

H old the p reload stud sta tio n a ry w ith a w rench on
the flats a n d tighten hex nut. T ig h ten until 20 in.
lbs. o f torque are re q u ire d to ro tate the bearings, as
shown in figure 20B.
5.
M ount the side b e a rin g discs J -2 1777-45 on the
ends o f a rb o r J - 2 1777-1, u sing the step o f the disc
th a t corresponds to the bore o f the c arrier.
6.
Place the a rb o r a n d p lu n g e r assem bly into the
carrie r, being sure the side b e a rin g discs are seated
properly.
7.
Install the b ea rin g caps finger tig h t to hold the discs
from m ovem ent.
8.
Position dial in d icato r J-8001 on the m o u n tin g post
o f the a rb o r w ith the co n tact b u tto n restin g on the
top surface o f the plunger.
9.
P reload the dial in d ic a to r o n e -h a lf revolution, and
tig h ten in this position.
10.
Select the
b u tto n on th e
g au g e p la te th a t
corresponds to the rin g g e a r size and ro tate the
plate until the p lu n g er rests directly upon th at
button.
11.
Rock the p lu n g er ro d slowly back and fo rth across
the b u tton until the d ial in d ic a to r read s the greatest
