Pinion Reassembly
1. Pack the cavity betw een the p in io n oil seal lips w ith
a lithium -base EP lu b ric an t to provide initial
lu b ricatio n and to aid in in sertin g p in io n flange.
2. Press the oil seal into the re ta in e r. P osition seal lips
tow ard the p in io n b earin g , using Tool J-22281 as
shown in F igure 4G .
3. Install the p in io n re a r b e a rin g assem bly on p in io n
sh a ft m aking sure th at c h a m fe red side o f in n e r race
seats ag ain st shoulder on p in io n sh aft. T h en install
p in io n b earin g lock rin g using Tool J- 1364 as
shown in F igure 5G.
4. To install p in io n fro n t b earin g , position the one-
piece double row ball b e a rin g on p in io n sh aft, so
th a t extended p o rtio n o f in n e r race is tow ard p in io n
h ead. T hen, using a su itab le length o f 2 inch pipe,
press b earin g onto sh a ft until it seats ag ain st the
p in io n head.
CAUTION: When pressing bearing on pinion,

5. Slide oil seal re ta in e r on p in io n sh aft, then tap
drive flange onto p in io n splines.
6. C lam p drive flange in a bench vise an d install
flange w ash er and nut. T o rq u e n u t to specifications
and install cotter pin w ith o u t backing off on nut.
Differential Disassembly
1. Check differential case to m ake sure th a t the two
halves are m ark ed so th ey m ay be reassem bled in
sam e relation. See F ig u re 6G .
2. Rem ove bolts hold in g case a n d cover together.
N O TE: R ing g ear is m o u n ted on the case.
3. S ep arate cover from case a n d rem ove differential
side gears and th ru st w ashers, p in io n gears w ith
thrust w ashers and differen tial spider.
Differential Inspection
1. W ash all p arts th o ro u g h ly in clean in g solvent.
2. Inspect rin g g ear fo r ch ip p ed , scored or w o rn teeth.
3. Check ra d ia l clearance betw een differential side
gears and differential case, also fit o f differential
pinions on spider.
4. Inspect sp id er arm s fo r w ear a n d distortion.
5. Inspect splines an d teeth o f differential side gears
and p in io n s fo r ch ip p in g or excessive w ear.
6. Check th ru st w ashers fo r w e a r an d replace if even
slight w ear is in dicated.
7. Check differential side b e a rin g s and cups for
broken races, discoloration o r roughness.
8. Inspect differential case fo r cracks or distortion.
Ring Gear Replacement
1. Rem ove rin g g ear from case by ta p p in g the back of
the g ear w ith a soft faced h a m m e r.
