GENERAL INFORMATION
AXLE IDENTIFICATION
It is im portant to know which axle is being serviced, in
order to use the correct overhaul procedure. The
m anufacturing code num ber on Passenger C ar axles may be
found on the axle tube close to the carrier. It is the third letter
of the axle code. For example, if an axle had this axle number:
H K P 218 DW , the m anufacturer could be determ ined from
the third letter, P. T ruck axles are identified in this section
by ring gear size.
The following chart lists pertinent inform ation needed
on Passenger Car and Series 10-30 T ruck axles.
ALTERNATE PINION DEPTH SETTING
PROCEDURE
A new pinion depth coding system facilitates the use of
Pinion Setting Gauge J-2 1777-01, as outlined in later portions
of this section. The coding system is used on passenger car
differentials with 8-1/2 inch and 8-7/8 ring gears, on
Corvette, and on truck models with 8-7/8 inch ring gears.
However, if J-2 1777-01 is
not
used in determining
pinion depth shim requirements, the following tools and
procedures are recommended. Only the steps of the
procedures th at differ from the J-2 1777-01 method are
mentioned.

8 -1/2" Ring Gear - Passenger Car
1. Set up the tools as shown in figure 4B-3A.
2. Preload the dial indicator one half revolution, with
the plunger off the gauge plate, and tighten in this position.
3. Rest the plunger on the low gauging surface, marked
