DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Removal and Disassembly
1. C lam p c arrier in H olding F ixture J-3289.
2. Rem ove snap rings securing side g e a r yokes and
pull yokes out o f ca rrier. See F igure 1C.
3. M ark differential b e a rin g caps fo r reassem bly in
sam e relative location an d rem ove caps.
4. Pull differential assem bly out o f c a rrier, taking care
not to dam age m ach in e d m o u n tin g surface on
ca rrier. See Figure 2C. R em ove differential b earin g
shim s and m ark for fu tu re reference.
5. To disassem ble, and reassem ble, follow procedures
outlined in "P o sitractio n D ifferen tial U n it" section.
Inspection
1. C lean all gears and b e arin g s in clean in g solvent
an d blow dry.
2. Inspect gears for scoring, p ittin g or cracks.
3. Inspect bearings fo r spalling, p ittin g or scoring.
D iscard all parts th a t show excessive w ear or
failure.
4. Inspect side gear d riv e sh a ft yokes closely fo r spline
w ear or yoke cracking. If eq u ip m e n t is available,
use m agnetic p e n e tra n t m eth o d to check fo r m inute
fractures in yokes or gears.
Differential Bearing Replacement
1. Place Puller J-22888 over differen tial b earin g using
A d a p te r Plug J -8 107-4 in side g e a r bore. T ig h ten
puller screw to rem ove b e a rin g as in F ig u re 3C.
2. Install new b earin g on hub using Installer J-22175.

Ring Gear or Differential Case Replacement
1. Rem ove rin g g ea r bolts a n d tap rin g gear off
differential case.
2. Install guide pins fa b ric a ted from 3 /8 -2 4 x 1 1 /2 "
bolts w ith heads rem oved a n d ends slotted as shown
in Figure 5C.
3. C lean rin g gear m o u n tin g surface an d m ounting
flange on case. Place rin g g ear on pilot case
diam eter.
