5. T h read end o f J-8614-3 in to sm all O .D . end o f
J-8614-2. T hen w ith J-8 6 1 4 -1 1 installed as in step 3,
insert J-8614-2 into J-8 6 1 4 -1 1 and tu rn it 1/8 o f a
tu rn to locked position. R em ove flange by tu rn in g
J- 8614-3 while holding J-8 6 1 4 -1 1 as show n in figure
15C.
6. W ith com p an io n flange rem oved, drive p in io n and
re a r b earin g assem bly can be rem oved from
ca rrier.
7. Pry com p an io n flange seal out o f c a rrie r using
screw d riv er and discard seal. R em ove p in io n fro n t
b earin g assem bly.
8. Pry differential side g e a r yoke seals out o f c a rrie r
and discard seals. U sing a piece o f 1 3 /4 " O.D.
p ip e o f suitable length, ta p yoke b earin g s out o f
bore.

Inspection
1. C lean all gears and b e arin g s in clean in g solvent
and blow dry.
N O TE: D o n o t spin b e a rin g s d u rin g drying
process. T he extrem ely fa st s p in n in g and lack
o f lu b ricatio n m ay quickly result in the
failu re o f an otherw ise re u sa b le b earing.
2. Inspect gears for scoring, p ittin g or cracks.
3. Inspect b earin g s fo r spalling, p ittin g or scoring.
D iscard all p a rts th a t show excessive w ear or
failure.
Pinion and/or Bearing Replacement
1. If necessary to replace p in io n b earin g s, tap old cups
out o f c a rrie r using a b rass d rift. See F igure 16C.
T ap a ltern ately on opposite sides o f cup to p revent
cups from cocking in ca rrie r. Inspect cup seats and
bore for any nicks or b u rrs and rem ove as
necessary before in stallin g new b e a rin g cups.
2. Select fro n t and re a r p in io n b earin g s and drive
cups into c a rrie r using D rive H an d le J-8092 and
Cup Installers J-8608 fo r the re a r cup and J-7137
fo r fro n t cup. See F igures 17C a n d 18C. Seat cups
securely and squarely a g ain st shoulders in carrier.
3. Rem ove p in io n re a r b e a rin g using Press Plates
J-9771 in H older J- 0358-1 as show n in F ig u re 19C.
Rem ove an d discard shim betw een b e a rin g and
g ear head.
Setting Pinion Depth
N O T E : If the o rig in al rin g g e a r and p in io n
and the p in io n re a r b e a rin g assem bly are to
be reinstalled, the o rig in al shim thickness
m ay be used.

rin g gear until a p o in t is reach ed w here best o p eratio n
and p ro p e r tooth contact u n d e r load is o b tain ed . At this
