DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist w ith re a r axle h a n g in g free.
2. Rem ove w heel a n d tire assem blies.
3. The axle sh afts are full-floating type w ith flanged
o u ter en d o f sh a ft a ttach ed to w heel hub by studs
and nuts. W heel is supported by tap ered roller
b earin g s at o u ter end o f axle housing.
a. R em ove axle sh a ft to hub atta ch in g nuts.
b. R ap on axle sh a ft to loosen sh a ft from hub and
rem ove shafts.
4. R em ove plug in c a rrie r an d d rain lubricant.
5. R em ove cap screws and lock w ashers attach in g
cover to carrie r. R em ove cover and gasket.
6. M ark one side o f c a rrie r and m atching cap fo r
reassem bly. R em ove cap screws attach in g b e a rin g
caps to carrier.
7. U sing sp read er Tool J-24385 and dial in d icato r as
show n in figure 15F, sp read carrie r a m axim um o f

CAUTION: Do not exceed this dimension as
carrier may be permanently damaged.
8. R em ove dial in d ic a to r an d w ith the use o f a pry b a r
rem ove differential case from carrier. R em ove
sp read er.
Disassembly
1. R em ove differential b e arin g cups and id en tify w ith
a tag fo r reassem bly.
2. Place differential in vise an d drive out p inion sh a ft
lock pin.
3. R em ove differential b e a rin g cone an d roller using
Puller J-22888, w ith Plug J -8 107-3, as in figure 16F.
T ag cone and rollers fo r assem bly.
N O T E : If rin g g ear a n d p inion are to be
reassem bled, note position o f shim s and
replace accordingly.
