T his setting m ay vary slightly from the design or
" n o m in a l" se ttin g due to allo w a b le v a ria tio n in
m ach in in g the parts. W hen a p in io n is found hav in g a
plus o r m inus re a d in g recorded in th o u sa n d th s on the
re a r face o f the pinion, this in d icates th a t the p in io n
d u rin g testing was found to hav e best tooth contact at a
po sitio n varying from design o r n o m in a l d epth.
In o rd er to com pensate fo r all o f the allow able
m ach in in g variables, a p ro ced u re o f g ag in g the c a rrie r
an d sh im m in g the p in io n has been developed. A fte r
g aging a carrier,
the
assem b ler m ust install
the
ap p ro p ria te shim betw een the drive p in io n sh o u ld er an d
the re a r b earin g so th at p in io n d ep th can be adjusted to
the req u ired position fo r best to o th contact in each axle
assem bly.
P ro p er p in io n d ep th is d e te rm in e d w ith p in io n setting
G au g e J-21777- 01.
1.
C lean the h ousing assem bly an d all gauge p arts to
insure accuracy o f m easurem ents.
2.
L ubricate the fro n t an d re a r p in io n b earin g s w hich
will be used in final assem bly a n d p o sitio n them in
th eir respective races in the c a rrie r.
3.
W ith clo v erleaf gauge plate J - 2 1777-36 m ounted on
preload stud J- 21777-43, in se rt stud th ro u g h re a r
b earin g and pilot J - 2 1777-35, an d th ro u g h fro n t
b ea rin g and pilo t J - 2 1777-42. Install the hex nut
until snug and ro ta te the b earin g s to m ake sure
they are p ro p e rly seated. See figure 20C for
illustration o f p ro p e r p o sitioning.

Hold the p relo ad stud sta tio n a ry w ith a w rench on
the flats and tig h te n hex nut until 20 in. lbs. o f
torque are re q u ire d to ro tate the bearings, as shown
in figure 21C.
5.
M ount the side b e a rin g discs J - 2 1777-45 on the
ends o f a rb o r J - 2 1777-1, using the step o f the disc
th a t corresponds to the bore o f the c a rrier.
6.
Place the a rb o r an d p lu n g e r assem bly into the
carrier, being sure the side b e a rin g discs are seated
properly.
7.
Install the b e a rin g caps finger tig h t to hold the discs
from m ovem ent.
8.
Position dial in d ic a to r J-8001 on the m o u n tin g post
o f the a rb o r w ith the co n tact b u tto n restin g on the
top surface o f the p lunger.
