5. Install d ial in d ica to r an d check rin g gear backlash
at fo u r equally spaced points aro u n d the rin g gear.
Backlash m ust be held to .004" to .009" and m ust
not vary m ore th a n .002" betw een positions
checked.
6. W henever backlash is not w ithin lim its, differential
b e a rin g shim pack should be corrected to b rin g
backlash w ithin lim its.
7. Check g e a r tooth contact, using yellow lead m ethod,
as d escribed earlier in " D a n a 1 0-1/2" R ing G e a r"
section, u n d e r " G e a r T o o th C o n ta ct P a tte rn
C heck". R e fe r to figure 25F.
8. U sing a new gasket, install housing cover and
torque bolts to specifications.
9. R einstall the re a r universal jo in t, and torque " U "
bolt nuts to specifications.
10. Install axles into c a rrie r and axle flange over hub
studs. T o rq u e hub stud nuts to specifications.
11. Fill differential w ith lubricant.
12. Install w heel and tire assem bly.
