POWER-LOK DIFFERENTIAL
T he Power-Lok differential show n in F ig u re 17D is a
unit w hich is installed as o p tio n al e q u ip m en t in place o f
the sta n d a rd differential. T he locking differential p erm its
the m ajo r driving force to be tra n sm itte d to the w heel
w ith b etter traction. T his m eans th a t the vehicle can be
o p erated on ice, snow, sand or u n d e r o th er adverse
conditions w ith a m inim um a m o u n t o f slippage th ro u g h
one wheel.
Disassembly
1.
Rem ove differential b e a rin g cups and tag for
reassem bly reference.
2.
Rem ove differential b e a rin g cones, using Puller
Tool J-22888.
3.
T ag each bearin g cone an d shim fo r reassem bly
reference, as they should be replaced in th eir
o rig in al locations.
4.
Scribe m ark on both halves o f d ifferential so they
can be reassem bled in th e ir o rig in al locations.
5.
Rem ove eight bolts a ttach in g two halves o f case
together.
6.
S ep arate p lain h a lf o f differen tial case from
flanged half.
7.
Rem ove five plates and discs fro m side g e a r ring.
N O TE: A series o f clutch plates a n d dished
(Belleville) friction plates on each side o f
differential side gears tran sm its drive from
differential case to axle shafts. C arefu lly
observe the o rd e r in w hich the plates are
used, since they m ust be rep laced in the sam e
order. R efer to F igure 17D.
8.
Rem ove side g ear rin g a n d side gear.
9.
Rem ove two cross sh afts a n d p in io n gears.
10.
Rem ove side gear, side g e a r ring, and five plates
and discs from the opposite side. O bserve the o rd er
in w hich the plates are used.
Inspection
1.
Inspect cross sh afts and p in io n s fo r scoring, w ear,
p ittin g , etc. If the cen ter lan d s o f e ith e r cross sh a ft
show signs o f wear, ex am in e ends o f axle sh afts to
determ in e if the axle sh a ft is ru b b in g ag ain st cross
sh aft. This ru b b in g co n d itio n m ay cause a w hine or
howl th at is sim ilar to a p in io n b e a rin g noise, at 40
to 50 M PH . This co n d itio n can be corrected by
g rin d in g 1 /3 2 " off the end o f the axle shaft.
