R em ove re a r p inion b e a rin g fro m p in io n sh a ft
using Press Plate J-22912, as show n in figure 15B.
T ig h ten nuts on tool u n til plates are u n d er the
b earin g in n er race. T h e n set the tool on a press.
M ake sure the plates stra d d le the o p en in g on the
press. D o not position bolts across the o p ening. To
do so m ay bend the bolts w hen pressure is applied.
Press b earing from p in io n . R ecord the thickness o f
shim rem oved from betw een b e a rin g and p in io n
head.

Inspect carrie r p inion b e a rin g bores an d shoulders
fo r nicks. Rem ove as necessary. C lean the bores
an d the installation tools.
5.
L ubricate both b e a rin g cups w ith liberal am ounts
o f hypoid lubricant.
6.
Install the re a r cup, w ith the large end a g ain st the
bore shoulder, using In staller J-0270-14 fo r Truck
m odels, and J-9745 fo r P assen g er C ar, as shown in
figure 16B.

Install the fro n t cup, w ith the large end ag ain st the
bore shoulder, using In staller J-7137 as shown in
figure 17B.

Check both bores to m ake sure cups are fully
seated.

N O T E : If the o rig in a l rin g g e a r an d p in io n
and the p in io n re a r b e a rin g assem bly are to
be reinstalled, the o rig in al shim thickness
m ay be used.
R ing and p in io n g e a r sets are m a tch e d in a special test
m achine w hich p erm its ad ju stm e n t o f p in io n d ep th in
rin g g ear until a p o in t is reach ed w h ere best o p eratio n
and p ro p er tooth co n tact u n d e r load is o b tain ed . At this
point, the setting o f the p in io n w ith referen ce to the
centerline o f the rin g g e a r is in d ic a te d by the m achine.
This setting m ay v ary slightly fro m the design or
