DRIVE PINION
Removal
1.
Rem ove differential as previously outlined.
2.
Check torque req u ired to ro tate drive p inion, as
described u n d er "D riv e P in io n - In stallatio n and
A d ju stm en t". If there is no p relo ad read in g , check
fo r looseness o f p in io n assem bly by sh ak in g (push-
pull) the com panion flange. Looseness indicates the
need fo r b earin g rep lacem en t.

Install H older J-8614-11 on flange by using two
bolts w ith flat w ashers, as shown in figure 12B.
P osition J-8614-11 on flange so th a t the fo u r
notches are tow ard the flange.

Rem ove p in io n hut and w asher.
5.
T h rea d end o f J-8614-3 into sm all O.D. end o f
J-8614-2. T hen w ith J-8614-11 in stalled as in step 3,
in sert J-8614-2 into J-8614-11 an d tu rn it 1/8 o f a
tu rn to locked position. R em ove flange by tu rn in g
J-8614-3 w hile holding J-8614-11 as show n in figure
13B.

To rem ove the drive pin io n , first th re a d the o rig in al
p in io n n u t h a lf w ay on the p in io n , fo r th read
protection.
7.
Place the differential cover te m p o ra rily back onto
the housing, using two screws. T his will p rev en t the
p in io n from falling to the floor d u rin g rem oval.
8.
T ap the end o f the p in io n n u t w ith a large h am m er
and a soft d rift, as show n in figure 14B.

carrier. Inspect b earin g s an d cups for d am ag e
and replace if needed.
9.
Rem ove the p in io n oil seal a n d the fro n t p in io n
bearing. R em ove the cover a n d retrieve the drive
p inion from the housing. D iscard the p in io n oil
seal, nut, and collapsible spacer. Use a new oil seal,
nut and spacer on reassem bly.
Bearing Removal and Cup Replacement
1.
If fro n t p in io n b ea rin g is to be replaced, drive
ou ter race from c a rrie r u sing a d rift in slots
provided fo r this p urpose. T ap altern ately on
opposite sides o f the b e a rin g cup to avoid cocking.
2.
If re a r p in io n b e a rin g is to be replaced, drive o u ter
race from c a rrie r using a d rift in slots p rovided fo r
this purpose.
