DC System
Two 28.5 VDC, 400 amp starter/
generators are the main source of
DC power for the aircraft. A 24V, 44
(or optional 43-amp) amp-hour bat-
tery supplies power for engine start-
ing and emergencies. A receptacle
below the left engine pylon allows
the connection of a 28V DC Ground
Power Unit (GPU).
Major DC system components
include:
n
two starter/generators with associ-
ated generator control units, con-
trol switches, ammeters, and
annunciators
n
one battery with associated
gauges, switches, and annuncia-
tors
n
one aft power junction box (J box)
nine DC buses
n
various DC relays
n
DC voltmeter.
The DC buses distribute power from
the battery, generators, or GPU to
equipment and systems requiring
DC power. The system is divided
into essentially two halves, Right
and Left. The distribution systems
are in parallel, allowing each genera-
tor to operate independently. One
half contains the Main DC buses that
connect together to a common Bat-
tery bus through current limiters.
The generators supply power to the
Main buses through power relays.
The second half contains the battery
and GPU which connect to a Hot
Battery bus. The battery and ground
power side of the system connect to
the Main bus side through the bat-
tery relay. The battery switch con-
trols the battery and emergency
power relays.
During normal operation, all the
buses connect together allowing the
generators to provide power to oper-
ate the systems and charge the air-
craft battery.
Starter/Generators
The primary sources of DC power
are the two 28.5V DC, 400 amp
starter/generators driven by the
engine accessory gearboxes
(Figure
5C-1)
.
The starter/generators serve a
dual function: to provide engine start
and to provide power to the DC bus
distribution system.
The generators cross-tie through two
current limiters and the Battery bus.
If one generator goes off-line, the
remaining generator powers both of
the Main DC buses. The overload
capability of each generator is 50%
(600 amps) for two minutes. Either
generator is capable of supplying the
entire normal DC electrical require-
ments of the aircraft. However, if the
vapor cycle air conditioning system
is installed and is operating, it must
be shut down during single generator
operation due to its high amp draw.
Starter Limits
Limit engine to three starter cycles
in a 30-minute period with a 30
second rest between each cycle.
The starter limitation is indepen-
dent of the starter power source
(i.e., battery, generator-assisted
cross start or APU).
