Maneuver Based
Approach to Stalls
Refer to the profile on page 3D-37.
The approach to stall should be con-
tinued only to the first evidence of a
stall (i.e., airframe buffet or stick
shaker, whichever occurs first). The
stick shaker on the forward side of
the pilot’s control column provides
tactile warning (i.e., vibration) of
impending stall. The angle-of-attack
transmitter activates the stick shaker.
At the beginning of the lower speed
buffet (approximately 8 to 10%
above the actual stall speed), the
stick shaker activates. If the AOA
system is inoperative, the stick
shaker does not operate.
At the first warning indication, initi-
ate an immediate recovery. Do not
allow the aircraft to go into full stall.
Perform the approach to stall in the
clean, takeoff, and landing configu-
rations. Practice altitude should be
no higher than 25,000 ft MSL (AFM
limitation), and no lower than
10,000 ft above terrain.
Before practicing approaches to
stall, clear the cockpit area of loose
articles; visually clear the practice
area, compute V

, and set airspeed
indicator bugs. Turn on the ignition
system as a precaution.
Clean/Cruise Configuration –
Flaps and Gear Up
While maintaining altitude and
heading (wings level), retard throttles
to idle. Autopilot should be engaged.
Increase power to 45% N

Observe the angle-of-attack indicator
information; stick shaker actuation
occurs when the indicator approaches
the red band. At the first evidence of
a stall (i.e., airframe buffet, or stick
shaker, whichever occurs first),
simultaneously accomplish the
following:
1. Autopilot - OFF
2. Pitch - Reduce angle of attack
(trim as necessary)
3. Bank - Level the wings
4. Throttles - Set takeoff power
5. Speedbrakes/Spoilers - Retract
6. Regain control of aircraft and
recover to maneuvering speed and
flight path appropriate for the air-
planes’s configuration
7. Do not exceed any limitations
(N/A for the simulator).
Takeoff/Approach
Configuration – Slats/Flaps 15°
Gear Up
Establish a level turn using 15° to
30° bank (approximately 20° bank in
the simulator); retard the throttles to
idle. As the aircraft slows, maintain
altitude with back pressure. Use trim
to reduce stick forces; however, stop
trimming at 0.6 AOA.
Increase power to 45% N

NOTE:
Regardless of the alti-
tude chosen to perform stall recov-
ery maneuvers in the simulator,
maintain that altitude throughout
the entire maneuver. (Do not let the
aircraft sink below that altitude
during the approach to stall, or
climb above that altitude during the
recovery).
