Fuel Filters and
Bypass
The fuel filters are located on the
lower forward outboard section of
each engine (
Figure 5F-12
) adjacent
to the engine-driven fuel pump,
between the first stage of the pump,
the fuel heater and the second stage of
the engine-driven fuel pump. Each
fuel filter contains a throw-away
paper element. The in-line fuel filters
are tee-types with a throw-away
paper element.
The filter contains a bypass valve and
an electrical switch that activates
when the filter becomes obstructed.
The bypass valve measures the input
and output pressure of the filter and
opens when the pressure differential
reaches 4.5 PSI to 5.0 PSI. The elec-
trical switch on the bypass operates
the FUEL FLTR BP L/R annunciator.
It is an early warning system that
indicates an impending bypass and
activates at 3.5 PSID to 4.0 PSID or 1
PSID before actual filter bypass.
Fuel Firewall
Shutoff Valves
The electrically operated fuel fire-
wall shutoff valves are in the dry bay
area of the wing
.
The valves operate
by pushing the LH or RH ENG FIRE
switch lights; they close or open in
approximately one second.
The F/W SHUTOFF L/R annuncia-
tors illuminate when the fuel and
hydraulic firewall shutoff valves to
the associated engine are closed.
Crossfeed Switch
and Valves
Two crossfeed valves
(Figure 5F-
10),
one in each dry bay area, control
fuel access to the crossfeed fuel line.
In normal operation, pressurized fuel
is not present in the crossfeed line
because of the valves' locations.
The crossfeed valves are motor-
operated ball valves that open or
close in less than 1.5 seconds in
response to inputs from the CROSS-
FEED switch. The valves remain
open as long as the switch is in
crossfeed.
The CROSSFEED switch is on the
lower left-hand corner of the cockpit
instrument panel
(Figure 5F-11).
Switch positions are L TANK/OFF/
R TANK. For left tank to right
engine crossfeed, place the switch in
L TANK. This activates the left
boost pump for crossfeeding. Simul-
taneously, the cross-feed valves
receive signals to open.
Three seconds after the crossfeed
valves open, the motive flow shutoff
valve for the non-selected tank auto-
matically closes. This action shuts
down the primary ejector pump pre-
venting ejector pressure from over-
riding selected wing boost pump
pressure and crossfeeding in the
wrong direction.
