Advanced 406 MHZ ELT's are capable
of transmitting a highly accurate GPS
location within their distress message.
Thus the process of distress relief is
reduced from "search and rescue" to
"get to and rescue." The coded informa-
tion contained in the ELT transmission
may vary; but can include any or all of
the following:
1. Country of origin,
2. A unique 15-digit hexadecimal
beacon ID code ("15-Hex ID"),
3. Encoded ID of the aircraft (Reg-
istration Number) or its ICAO 24-bit
address (from its Mode-S transpon-
der),
4. Most recently updated GPS posi-
tion (when interfaced with the
onboard FMS/GPS equipment),
5. Whether or not the ELT contains
a 121.5 MHz "homer."
The 406 MHz ELT's transmit for one
quarter of a second immediately when
activated; and then transmits a digital
burst every 50 seconds thereafter. Both
GEOSAR and LEOSAR satellites
monitor these signals. In addition, 406
MHz ELT's are the only beacons com-
patible with the MEOSAR (DASS)
system. 406 MHz ELT's (just like the
Personal GPS Locator Transmitters)
must be registered when purchased and
installed. Doing so is to the operators'
advantage in the event the aircraft must
make an emergency landing "off-air-
port." Rescue efforts could be launched
in as little as four minutes from ELT
activation; and could dispatch to the
last-reported coordinates to within 100
meters of your location before spotting
the aircraft and/or survivors. (Dispatch
time under the old frequency satellite
detection system could be as little as 4
hours; but could take days to locate the
distressed aircraft). The Artex C406-1
ELT beacon has an external FMS/GPS
interface; and the C406-N has an inter-
nal FMS/GPS interface capability.
Static Discharging
Static discharger wicks
(Figure 5B-
25)
on the wing tips, horizontal and
vertical stabilizers, control surfaces,
and tailcone minimize the effects of
lightning strikes on the aircraft struc-
ture and static charges on avionics
equipment. The dischargers bleed
off accumulated static charges to the
atmosphere and direct lightning
strikes away from the aircraft. Dur-
ing the preflight inspection, check
the presence, security, and condition
of each static wick.
Flitefone VI (Optional)
The optional solid state Wulfsberg
Flitefone VI provides air-to-ground
telephone communications. It oper-
ates in the ultra high frequency
(UHF) band, is frequency modulated
(FM), and the operating frequency is
in the 450 MHz range. Twelve tele-
phone channels are provided plus
one ground-to-air selecting calling
channel (SEL CALL).
The system includes the receiver/
transmitter with mounting tray,
antenna on the lower side of the nose
compartment, and cockpit and cabin
stations. The cockpit station is
behind and to the right of the copilot
on the cockpit divider door. The
cabin station is mid cabin in the arm-
rest of passenger seat number six.
The HF/BELL OFF/PHONE switch
in the base of the Flitefone has three
functions: to silence the bell, to
select the PHONE function, or to use
it in the BF mode. To use the system
in the PHONE function, the aircraft
must be within range of a ground
station to complete the call. To use
the Flitefone in the HF mode, the
HF/BELL OFF/PHONE switch con-
nects the Push-To-Talk (PTT) switch
on the side of the phone to the HF
radio to key the HF microphone, and
