Primary Lighting
The majority of the instruments have
internal lighting. Electrolumines-
cent panels illuminate the switches
and control positions. Each elec-
troluminescent panel consists of a
layer of phosphor sandwiched
between two electrodes and encased
in plastic. An electric current flow-
ing through the electrodes causes the
phosphor to glow.
Internal instrument lighting uses 5V
DC supplied by three inverters: one
each for the left, center, and right
instrument panel lights. The LH
PANEL circuit breaker supplies 28V
DC from the Left Main Extension
bus and the RH PANEL and CEN-
TER PANEL circuit breakers sup-
ply 28V DC from the Right
Crossover bus. An ON/OFF switch
supplies power to the inverters and
the LEFT, CENTER, and RIGHT
rheostats vary light intensity.
The post lights use either 5V or 28V
DC. The internal and post lighting
systems illuminate the instrument
panels, side consoles, and pedestal.
Electroluminescent panels are on the
instrument panel, side consoles, and
control pedestal. The EL PANEL
circuit breaker supplies 28V DC
from the Left Main Extension bus to
the inverter through the ON/OFF
switch. The inverter then converts
28V DC into 40 to 60V AC, 400 Hz
for the panels. The EL rheostat con-
trols the brightness of the panels
from off to full intensity.
Secondary Lighting
Secondary lighting includes two
flood lights and two overhead map
lights.
The two floodlights on the overhead
panel
(Figure 5C-21),
plus an alter-
nate engine instrument floodlight on
the lower surface of the fire tray,
illuminate the cockpit and engine
instruments. The FLOOD LIGHTS
circuit breaker supplies 28V DC
controlled by the FLOOD LTS
switch
(Figure 5C-22)
from the
Emergency bus to the lights. When
either engine is in the start cycle, the
lights receive power from the emer-
gency battery pack (see Emergency
Lighting).
A map light
(Figure 5C-23)
on the
left and right overhead panel shines
down to illuminate the pilot and
copilot stations. Each light receives
power from the Right Crossover bus
through the RH PANEL circuit
breaker.
