Lubber Line
The lubber line (4) is a white triangle
at the apex of the compass, outside
the compass arc, that fits inside the
heading bug when the two are
aligned. The angular error between
heading input and displayed head-
ing, as read against the lubber line, is
less than ±50 minutes. Other sym-
bols relative to the lubber line are
seven tick marks at 45° intervals
around the outside around the out-
side of the compass and the drift
angle bug (which is also relative to
the compass card).
A digital heading display indicates the
aircraft's current heading in green dig-
its above a V-shaped notch at the apex
of the compass when in the arc mode.
It replaces the lubber line and fits
inside the heading bug when the bug is
at the center of the arc.
Drift Angle Bug
The drift angle bug (5), displayed as a
magenta triangle that moves around
the outside of the compass card (in
FULL or ARC modes) represents drift
angle relative to the desired track
(when relative to the lubber line), or to
the aircraft's actual track (when rela-
tive to the compass card).
A drift bug appears in Phase H when
FMS is the selected navigation
source. It indicates the angular dif-
ference between the FMS calculated
track and aircraft current track. The
drift bug colors (Phase 11) are green,
magenta, or yellow depending upon
the NAV source or the type of EHSI
display or annunciator.
Heading Display Dial and Fore
and Aft Lubber Lines
Gyro-stabilized magnetic compass
information appears on a standard type
compass dial (6) format that rotates
with the aircraft throughout 360°.
The azimuth ring is graded in 5°
increments. Fixed heading marks are
at the fore and aft lubber line posi-
tions at 45° bearings.
NAV Source Annunciator
The selected NAV source (7) for dis-
play on the Course Deviation Indica-
tor (CDI) is both a full and a partial
compass mode display. It is trans-
mitted from the on-side display con-
troller. The navigation sources
available are VOR 1/2, ILS 1/2, and
FMS. When FMS is selected, the
EHSI has the only display for course
deviation. If the onside display con-
troller is invalid, the symbol genera-
tor processor reverts to the on-side
primary NAV (i.e., the pilot's VOR 1
or the copilot's VOR 2).
The NAV source annunciation
appears in green or yellow in the
upper right corner of the display for
a short range source or in magenta
for a long range source. An amber
indication means an offside selection
or that both sources are the same. A
yellow annunciation of FMS indi-
cates that both pilots are selected to
the FMS. The label identification is
always white.
The CDI is positioned by the course
knob (which is not functional when
FMS mode is selected) on the
remote instrument controller. The
CDI is magenta when FMS course
information is presented and is green
or yellow when onside or off-side
information is presented, respec-
tively. If a single FMS is installed,
and both pilots' displays are selected
to FMS, both CDIs will display FMS
information in amber.
