If the VFR pushbutton is inadvertently
pressed, the previous non programmed
4096 code may be retrieved by press-
ing the VFR pushbutton again for
three seconds.
The KT 70 Transponder has an alti-
tude display on the left side of the dig-
ital readout that is incremented in
hundreds of ft. The display annunci-
ates an FL to indicate a flight level, an
altitude that corresponds one above
sea level with the altimeter set at 29.92
inHg. Flight level also corresponds to
the altitude being transmitted to air
traffic control, and seldom agrees to
the indicated altitude on the altimeter.
The altitude display is active only
when altitude reporting is enabled in
ALT and GND modes.
An R reply indicator on the digital dis-
play illuminates when the transponder
is replying to a valid interrogation by a
ground station. It illuminates for
approximately 18 seconds after the ini-
tiation of IDENT.
Distance Measuring
Equipment
The standard distance measuring
equipment (DME) installation con-
sists of the following equipment:
n
two DM-441B Receiver-Trans-
mitters in the nose avionics com-
partment
n
two KDI-572 Indicator/Controls
on the pilot's and copilot's instru-
ment panel.
n
two antennas on the bottom for-
ward fuselage, below the cabin,
one forward of the other.
The VOR/DME tuning is controlled
by the KN-53 NAV receiver on the
consolidated control panel. When a
VOR station is tuned, the DME fre-
quency is automatically tuned. The
DME IDENT can be verified by
selecting the appropriate DME on the
DME selector switch on the audio
control panel (see
Figure 5B-37
),
next page.)
Selecting either NAV 1 or NAV 2 on
the display controller automatically
selects the DME display and annun-
ciates DME information on the PFD
from the respective NAV 1/2 (DME
1/2). Selecting the same NAV
(VOR) on both display controllers
annunciates the selection in amber to
indicate that both NAVs are selected
to the same side. The selected DME
presented on the PFD is always the
same as the NAV source (VOR). In
case of a cross selection, the annun-
ciations are white.
DME groundspeed or time to station
readouts are only accurate when the
aircraft is proceeding directly to or
from the selected station. Since slant
range is computed, groundspeed or
time to station accuracy increases
with distance from the station. The
read-outs are considered reasonably
close to actual speed or time when
distance from the station in miles is
equal to or greater than the aircraft's
altitude in thousands of feet.
The KDI-572 digitally displays dis-
tances in nautical miles, ground
speed in knots, and time-to-station in
minutes. All displays are in self-
dimming gas discharge numerics.
The HOLD function on the KDI-
572's ON/OFF/HOLD rotary switch
is the only provision for switching
DMEs; it also allows a DME station
to be held when the VOR is retuned.
To retune the KN-53 NAV control
but retain the DME readout of the
present station, select HOLD on the
desired KDI-572 and the receiver
retuned. The DME will be held to
the previous station even though the
bearing will indicate from the new
station. An amber H annunciates to
the left of the EHSI distance display
to indicate that DME frequency and
information are being held. An H
also annunciates in the KDI-572 dis-
play to warn that the DME is in the
HOLD mode.
