Normal visual indications with the
gear down and locked are three green
lights illuminated, and the red
"GEAR UNLOCKED" light extin-
guished. When the gear retracts, all
lights should extinguish.
Audible Indication
The Landing Gear Warning System
sounds an audible warning horn
when:
1. The aircraft indicated airspeed is
reduced below approximately 150
KIAS,
2. If either throttle is reduced below
approximately 70% N
2
(Throttle
Cable Position) in flight,
3. And the Landing Gear is NOT
down and Locked.
In the previous instances, the Warn-
ing Horn can be silenced by depress-
ing the Horn Silence Switch on the
right side panel of the Gear Control
Handle. The horn automatically
resets and "arms" for re-activation
when the throttle is advanced above
approximately 70% N
2
inflight; and
when indicated airspeed increases
above approximately 150 KIAS.
The horn also sounds if the flaps are
extended beyond the 15° (T.O./
APPR) position with the landing
gear NOT Down and Locked. In this
situation, the horn cannot be
silenced by any method until the
flaps are retracted back to the 15°
(T.O./APPR) position; or all three
gear assemblies are Down and
Locked. As a practical operational
example; in the event of a Missed
Approach/Go-Around/Balked Land-
ing, when the flap control is brought
up to the 15° (T.O./APPR) position,
the warning horn will sound imme-
diately; and continue to alarm until
the landing gear is selected UP, and
all three gear assemblies have locked
securely in the Gear Uplocks.
Tail Skid
A tail skid extends below the tail-
cone skin. It consists of a steel weld
assembly attached to bulkheads. The
tail skid prevents the tail assembly
from scraping the ground during
over-rotation, or excessive nose-high
attitude on landing.
Operation
Landing Gear Control
Handle
The control handle on the bottom
left of the center instrument panel
selects landing gear retraction (UP)
or extension (DOWN). The handle
must be pulled out of its detente
before it can be moved. A spring-
loaded solenoid holds the handle in
the DOWN position and prevents
inadvertent movement of the handle
on the ground.
Movement of the handle sends an
electrical signal to close the hydrau-
lic bypass valve. Simultaneously, the
landing gear control valve moves to
the retract or extend position as
selected.
DC power for the gear handle, warn-
ing lights, warning horn, and locking
solenoid is through the GEAR CON-
TROL CB on the Left Main extension
bus. If the solenoid fails or electrical
power is lost, the gear handle cannot
be moved to the UP position, how-
ever, the handle can be moved to the
DOWN position in flight.
Retraction
With weight off the left squat switch,
the electric solenoid lock pin under
the gear handle retracts electrically to
allow the pilot to place the landing
gear handle in the UP position.
