Circuit Breakers
Circuit Breakers (CBs) provide over-
load protection for specific aircraft
systems and components. Each CB
has a rating that varies with the maxi-
mum load of the protected system or
component. An amperage rating,
clearly marked on each CB, indicates
the amperage at which the CB opens
to protect that circuit or component.
The opening of a CB is automatic.
Panels on both sides of the cockpit
contain all the electrical system CBs
accessible in flight. They may be
manually reset or pulled by the flight
crew because each is a push-to-reset
type. CBs in the tailcone J box are
inaccessible in flight.

of this chapter.
Current Limiters
The current limiters in the tailcone J
box provide the same function as
CBs; however, they break power to a
bus rather than to a specific compo-
nent. The primary current limiters
have a 225 amp rating and are
between the Battery bus and the
Main buses to prevent excessive cur-
rent flow back to the Battery and Hot
Battery buses or a ground fault on
one of the buses.
Secondary current limiters, rated to
open at 80 amps, connect the Main
buses to each of the three parallel
feeders to the Main Extension buses.
A current limiter actuates automati-
cally, but cannot be reset; once a cur-
rent limiter opens, it must be
replaced before dispatch.
Before Start Checks
When initially powering the system,
turn the standby Gyro on. The
standby gyro should power up and
the emergency instrument lighting
should operate. Place the battery
switch to EMER and check the
emergency bus items. The cockpit
flood lights, the Communications
panels, N
1
indicators, RMU 1, Com
1, Nav 1 and the standby HSI should
operate. The voltmeter should indi-
cate 24 volts. The battery can now
be placed to BATT. Check the
engine instruments are powered. Off
flags on one side of the engine
instruments indicates failure of a 225
amps current limiter.
As a technique, when placing exter-
nal power on, switch to EMER. Con-
nect to external power. Then check
the system voltage. Ensure the volt-
age is 26 to 28 volts before selecting
the switch to BATT. This will pro-
tect the aircraft from a miss-set
power carts.
DC Operation
After engine start with the genera-
tors on-line, the electrical system
requires little more than monitoring
unless an abnormal or emergency
condition develops. There are, how-
ever, three different methods to start
the engine:

GPU start
n
Battery start
n
Cross-generator assisted start.
CAUTION:
Turbine speed
greater than 53% N
2
on the
operating engine produces a
generator voltage output that
may shear or damage the second
engine’s starter/generator drive
during the second start.
