the glideslope frequency is also
used. The Instrument Landing Sys-
tem (ILS) combines outputs from the
localizer and glideslope receivers to
receive and display horizontal (lat-
eral) and vertical (glideslope) guid-
ance information. This allows an
established instrument approach pro-
file to be followed. Multiple outputs
drive the flight director, HSIs, and
autopilot.
Glideslope deviation appears on the
pilots' PFDs and on the standby HSI
when the ILS frequency is tuned and
the aircraft is within range of the
ILS. If the localizer signal is unreli-
able or absent, a red X appears in the
center of the PFD. If glideslope
information is unreliable or absent, a
red X appears at the glideslope indi-
cation on the PFD.
KN-53 Controls
The KN-53 Controls use two seven
digit gas discharge displays for the
controlling or active (USE) frequency
in the left window and a pilot-
selected preset (STBY) frequency in
the right window. Dimming of the
readouts is by automatic photo sens-
ing. Dual concentric frequency select
knobs control the display.
Use the outer concentric knob on the
right of the display to set MHz in
one MHz steps; use the inner con-
centric tuning knob to set MHz in 50
kHz steps. The frequency rolls over
or under, as applicable, at the end of
the tuning band. Tuning of the NAV
frequencies in normal mode of oper-
ation is done in the STBY window
and then flip-flopped into the USE
window by pressing the DOUBLE
ARROW (frequency transfer) but-
ton. This allows retuning the desired
frequency and interchanging the old
and new frequencies with one touch.
The STBY window is then available
for a new pretuned frequency.
The OFF/PULL/ID knob operates as
an on/off/volume control as well as a
control for selecting voice/code
identification (ID), or only code ID
signals of VOR stations. Pulling the
knob out allows the station ID tone
signals and the station voice
announcements to be heard. Push-
ing it in allows only NAV voice sig-
nals to be heard. Rotating the knob
controls the volume of the audio sig-
nals; complete counterclockwise
rotation turns off power to the NAV
receiver.
Marker Beacon Receivers
Two KMR-675 Marker Beacon
Receivers, which are remotely
mounted in the lower forward part of
the nose avionics compartment, pro-
vide marker beacon signals to the
pilots through the marker beacon
presentations on their respective
PFDs. These receivers are in opera-
tion whenever the avionics power
switches are ON and power is avail-
able. They operate on a frequency of
75.00 MHx. The marker beacon
antenna is near the trailing edge of
the right wing beneath the fuselage.
Marker Beacon 1 provides marker
beacon data to the pilot's marker
beacon annunciators on the center
right side of the PFD and VOR,
localizer (ILS), and marker beacon
signals to the audio control panels.
Marker Beacon 2 serves the same
function except for providing marker
beacon data to the copilot's marker
beacon annunciators.
The annunciators in the pilots' PFDs
are part time displays. A white box
in the center of the display identifies
the location of the marker beacon
annunciator when a localizer fre-
quency is tuned. The marker bea-
cons are annunciated by the
appropriately colored letters: a blue
