Primary Flight
Controls
Primary flight controls allow control
of the aircraft through the pitch, roll,
and yaw axes. The control columns
and rudder pedals in the cockpit con-
trol the primary flight controls via
cables and bellcranks.
Ailerons
Ailerons (
Figure 5E-1
) on the out-
board trailing edge of each wing pro-
vide roll control of the aircraft
mechanically through the control
wheel or electronically through the
autopilot servo. The autopilot aileron
servo has an override function so the
pilot can physically overpower the
servo by manually rotating the control
wheel. An amber AP ROLL
MISTRIM light advises when the
autopilot is in an out-of-trim condi-
tion and that a sustained trim input is
being applied to the aileron servo (for
a detailed description of the autopilot,
see the Avionics Chapter).
Rotation of the aileron control wheel
mechanically actuates the aileron
control system and transmits aileron
directional information to the sector
assembly by the fuselage cable
assemblies, causing the sector assem-
bly to rotate. The sector assembly is
below the cabin floor, aft of the rear
carry-through spar. Wing cable
assemblies transmit the sector assem-
bly rotation to the aileron actuators,
which move the ailerons to the
desired position.
Rotation of the aileron sector assem-
bly by the autopilot aileron servo
cables electronically actuates the aile-
ron control system. As above, the
wing cable assemblies transmit the
sector assembly rotation to the wing
aileron actuators, which move the
ailerons. The fuselage cables attached
to the sector assemblies then rotate
the control wheels in the cockpit.
Rotation of either control wheel
moves ailerons inversely to one
another through a synchronized inter-
connecting cable system (i.e., the aile-
ron on one wing moves up as the
aileron on the opposite wing moves
down). Full range of travel for the aile-
rons is 19 ± 1° up and 15 ± 1° down.
Roll Trim
A trim tab connected to the trailing
edge of the left aileron provides roll
trim. A trim tab control knob (
Fig-
ure 5E-2)
on the center control ped-
estal below the autopilot control
head mechanically operates the trim
tab via a cable and an actuator. The
rotation of the knob transmits
mechanical action to the aileron trim
tab actuator screws that adjust the
trim tab up or down.
An indicator on the pedestal displays
aileron trim position. The indicator
displays the amount of trim away
from neutral. Full travel of the tab is
20 ± 1° up and down.
