UP or DN annunciators when a sus-
tained trim input is applied to the
elevator servo. These annunciations
remain illuminated as long as the
elevator servo holds a significant
force to maintain attitude. The indi-
cator should be off before engaging
the autopilot. An illuminated TRIM
annunciator with a disengaged auto-
pilot may result in an out-of-trim
condition in the annunciated direc-
tion. The AP PTCH MISTRIM light
on the annunciator panel repeats the
TRIM annunciator on the autopilot
control panel. The AP ROLL
MISTRIM light indicates that a suf-
ficient level of roll mistrim is present
and warns of an out-of-trim roll con-
dition if the autopilot is discon-
nected.
Rotating the TURN knob out of cen-
ter detente allows manual bank con-
trol of the aircraft proportional to
and in the direction of knob rotation.
The farther the knob is turned, the
greater the roll angle. Turns with a
maximum bank angle of 27° can be
performed with the TURN knob.
The TURN knob must be in the cen-
ter detente position before autopilot
engagement. Rotation of the knob
out of detente cancels any other pre-
viously selected lateral mode.
The PITCH wheel allows manual
pitch control proportional to the rota-
tion of the wheel and in the direction
of wheel movement. Movement of
the wheel also cancels the altitude
hold and altitude preselect capture
modes. During an autopilot
glideslope capture, movement of the
wheel has no effect on aircraft pitch
angle. Movement of the PITCH
wheel with a flight director vertical
mode selected changes the displayed
vertical mode reference; the autopilot
responds to these changes.
Pressing the appropriate mode but-
ton on the mode selector cancels the
vertical modes.
The LOW BANK LIMIT mode gen-
erates a lower maximum bank angle
while in the flight director HDG
mode only. Pressing the BANK
LIMIT button illuminates the green
LOW annunciator and indicates acti-
vation of bank limiting, which
reduces the maximum autopilot bank
angle to 14°. LOW bank mode auto-
matically engages above 34,000 ft
altitude and automatically cancels
when descending through 33,750 ft,
unless LOW is pressed. If the HDG
mode is selected and then deselected
while LOW bank is engaged, the
LOW bank mode disengages and the
engage light extinguishes upon dis-
engagement of the HDG mode.
However, if the HDG mode is reen-
gaged, the LOW bank mode reen-
gages and the annunciator re-
illuminates. Pressing BANK LIMIT
when it is illuminated returns the
autopilot to normal bank limits.
A reversionary AP XFER FD1/AP
XFER FD2 switch (see
Figure 5B-
29
)
on the center instrument panel
selects between the pilot's and copilot's
flight director systems to provide alti-
tude, heading, and flight director com-
mands to the autopilot. The switch
illuminates green to indicate the sys-
tem in use. The position of this switch
can be changed with the autopilot
engaged or disengaged; however,
flight director modes drop out. If
already engaged, the autopilot remains
engaged but reverts to basic autopilot
modes of pitch and heading hold.
As a safety feature, perform an autopi-
lot system test before each flight; the
autopilot engages without this test.
