The starter/generator has a shear sec-
tion in its drive shaft protecting the
accessory gear box during excessive
torque. At 1500 in/lbs of torque the
shear point will fail, isolating the
starter generator.
Each starter/generator has an inter-
nal fan that cools the unit during
ground operation. In flight, an air
inlet duct on the forward engine
cowling directs ram air to the starter/
generator to provide cooling. An
exhaust duct on the lower cowling
directs cooling air overboard.
Generator Control Units
The Generator Control Units
(GCUs) in the tailcone
(Figure 5C-
2)
provide starter and voltage regula-
tion, feeder and ground fault protec-
tion, overvoltage protection, load
sharing, over-excitation protection
and reverse current protection.
Refer to the DC Protection section in
this chapter for further details.
Generator Control
Switches
Each generator has a three-position
(GEN/OFF/RESET) control switch on
the left instrument panel
(Figure 5C-3
).
In GEN, regulation, protection, and
Main bus connection are automatic
through the GCU; once the generator
reaches operating speed, the genera-
tor connects to its Main bus and
begins supplying power at the correct
voltage (refer to DC schematic to
trace flow to Main bus, page
5C-6
).
The center OFF position disconnects
the generator from its Main bus
without de-exciting it by opening the
power relay.
An over-voltage, feeder fault or
engine fire switch actuation will
result in the generator de-exciting
and disconnecting from the bus.
The momentary RESET position
resets a generator field relay that
tripped from overvoltage, feeder
fault, or ENG FIRE switch actua-
tion. Positioning the switch to
RESET also may be necessary fol-
lowing a windmilling airstart.
Ammeters
The left and right ammeters on the
left switch panel
(Figure 5C-4)
dis-
play the load in amps on each gener-
ator. The ammeters are identical and
have a red radial line at 400 amps
that indicates the maximum genera-
tor load. A yellow arc at 315 to 400
amps indicates maximum amps
allowable at high altitudes.
If a generator failure or shutdown
occur, the load on the affected gener-
ator drops to zero while the load on
the operating generator increases to
meet the demand because the buses
are tied together.
Generator Operating Limits
Up to 35,000 ft. . . . . . . . . 400 amps
Above 35,000 ft. . . . . . . . 325 amps
(Do not exceed 315 amps after the
loss of both generators and only one
generator comes back on).
