Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI)
The VSI (3) resembles a standard
analog scale and pointer, reading in
thousands of ft (to 3,000 ft) with tick
marks at 500 ft.
The scale is white with a green
pointer. An invalid vertical speed
removes the vertical speed pointer
from the display.
A pointer rotates about a point out-
side the actual display. The pointer
limits are ±3,500 fpm. For vertical
speeds greater than ±3,500 fpm, the
pointer is positioned near the end of
the scale and the digital display
gives the actual vertical speed value.
Vertical Speed Digital Display
Vertical speed is a fixed-scale meter
movement type display (4) with
green digits inside a white box on
the zero reference line. The scale is
nonlinear, providing increased reso-
lution around zero vertical speed. A
digital readout of the actual vertical
speed appears in the center of the
scale. The digital display has a reso-
lution of 50 fpm and accommodates
rates of climb or descent of 9,999
fpm. An invalid vertical speed also
removes the display and the digital
readout box.
Vertical Speed Reference Line
The vertical speed reference line (5)
represents level flight, or vertical
speed zero.
Standby Airspeed/
Altitude/Attitude/Indicator
A Meggitt Avionics Secondary Flight
Display System (SFDS) combines
standby attitude indicator, altimeter,
and airspeed indications into one com-
posite instrument
(Figure 5B-14).
This DC-powered active matrix LCD
indicator also includes a Mach indica-
tion in the instrument.
The SFD contains solid state inertial
sensors for the measurement and
presentation of pitch and bank atti-
tudes. Application of 28V DC power
to this system starts the attitude ini-
tialization process, which lasts for
180 seconds, by displaying an atti-
tude initializing message in yellow
on the SFD. The aircraft must
remain stationary during the initial-
ization process, or the unit will start
the entire 180 second initialization
process over again. If the Meggitt
unit fails to initialize on the second
attempt, it must be turned OFF and
turned ON again to attempt another
180 second initialization cycle. Dis-
patching the aircraft without an
operational SFD is not recom-
mended.
A rolling tape on the left side of the
display shows airspeed. The tape is
marked in one knot increments with
a rolling digit display in the center.
The airspeed display becomes active
at 40 knots. The Mach number
appears in the upper left corner and
has a range of 0.35 to 0.99 Mach.
The attitude display has an instanta-
neous range of 360° of bank and 50°
of pitch. A moving tape, calibrated
in 100-ft increments, on the right
side of the display includes a rolling
digit depiction of altitude.
