CAE SimuFlite
O for outer marker, an amber M for
middle marker, and a white I for inner
marker. The letters appear when the
marker beacon receiver is activated.
Each marker beacon is transmitted to
the audio control panel and is heard in
the speakers/headphones, if selected,
and uses a different dot-dash sequence
and tone to identify itself.
The outer marker, located from four
to seven miles from the runway
threshold, has a 400 Hz two dash per
second tone. The middle marker,
located 3,000 to 6,000 ft from the
runway threshold, has a 1300 Hz
tone with 95 alternating dots and
dashes per minute. The inner marker
has a 3000 Hz tone with six dots per
second. As the aircraft passes over
each beacon during an approach, the
respective annunciators flash and
tones sound.
The audio muting system provides
the pilots with a method of tempo-
rarily cutting out the marker beacon
audio. Pressing the MKR MUTE
switch on the audio control panels
mutes the marker beacon signal for
approximately 30 seconds.
Automatic Direction Finder
The KR-87 Automatic Direction
Finder (ADF) is a single unit receiver/
control in the consolidated control
panel on the right side of the center
instrument panel
(
see
Figure 5B-28,
page 5B-32
)
.
The ADF system oper-
ates in the frequency range of 200 to
1,799 kHz. The KR-87 control panel
uses two gas discharged digital read-
outs to display the controlling or
active (USE) frequency and a pilot-
selected preset (STBY) frequency.
The system is comprised of a
receiver, a built-in electronic timer,
the bearing indicator on the pilots'
PFDs, which must be selected on the
respective display controllers, and a
KA-44B combined loop and sense
antenna.
Power to the system is controlled by
the ON/OFF/VOL knob on the right
side of the control panel. Rotating
the knob clockwise from the
detented position adjusts the volume
and applies power to the ADF.
Control of the frequency is by two
concentric knobs to the right side of
the ON/OFF/VOL knob. The
smaller, inner knob controls the 1
digits when pulled out and the 10
digits when pushed in. The larger,
outer concentric knob controls the
100 and 1,000 digits up to a fre-
quency of 1,799 Khz.
The annunciation of FRQ in the dis-
play indicates that the frequency select
knobs control the tuning of the STBY
window digits. Once tuned, the STBY
frequency may then be inserted into
the USE window by pressing the FRQ
button, which flip-flops the STBY and
USE frequencies.
Operating Modes
Two modes of operation can be
selected by the ADF button. Pulling
out on the ADF button selects and
annunciates the antenna (ANT)
mode, which provides improved
audio signal reception for tuning and
is used for identification. In the ANT
mode, the ADF pointer parks at 90°
to the aircraft's heading. Pushing in
on the ADF button selects and
annunciates the ADF mode and indi-
cates relative bearing, which also
indicates magnetic bearing on the
EHSI display on the PFD.
Pressing the BFO (beat frequency
oscillator) button selects and annun-
ciates the BFO mode, which is used
to better identify coded station iden-
tifier signals from stations that are
unmodulated.
