Lubrication
The system provides cooled, pres-
surized oil for lubrication and cool-
ing of engine bearings and accessory
drive gears and bearings. An integral
oil tank on each engine has a capac-
ity of 5.03 U.S. quarts, of which 3.17
U.S. quarts are unusable
(Figure 5L-
5)
.
Oil is drawn from the tank by the
engine oil pump mounted on the
accessory gearbox. After leaving the
oil tank it passes by a chip collector
and through a filtering screen.
Should the filter become clogged, a
bypass valve opens, allowing lubri-
cation to continue. Before it enters
the oil cooler, which is a fuel/oil heat
exchanger, it passes a pressure relief
valve, which bypasses excess pres-
sure back into the tank. The oil then
passes through individual strainers
and to the engine bearings. Pressur-
ized oil from the number five bear-
ing continues to the accessory gear
box to lubricate it. Four scavenge
pumps return the oil from the main
bearings and the accessory gear box,
to the oil tank. The oil filter is
equipped with an pressure switch to
warn of impending filter bypass.
Cockpit indicators receive inputs
from the appropriate pressure switch.

Oil Pump
An engine-driven oil pump on the
intermediate casing pressurizes oil
from the oil tank for circulation
through the engine and returns oil
from the engine to the oil tank.
The five-element oil pump consists of
a single-element pressure side and a
four-element scavenge side driven by
a common shaft. The pump uses the
intermeshing of gears to draw oil from
the oil tank (pressure pump) and the
accessory gearbox (scavenge pump).
Oil Cooler
An oil cooler mounted adjacent to
the engine-driven fuel pump circu-
lates oil and fuel through separate
passages to cool hot oil flowing from
the pump to the filter. Hot oil flow-
ing through the cooler transfers heat
to fuel. If the oil passages clog, a
bypass valve opens to route oil
around the cooler.
NOTE:
The oil cooler is also
referred to as the “Fuel Heater”
when discussing the Fuel System.
The assembly is officially labeled a
“Fuel/Oil Heat Exchanger.”.
