cartridge. The resulting explosive
pressure breaks the end of the car-
tridge housing assembly and
removes the mechanical locking
force against the valve plug. The fire
extinguishing agent discharges
through the swivel into the distribu-
tion network. The lights in that
respective switch will then extin-
guish, indicating that the bottle has
been discharged.
Deployment tubes route the extin-
guishing agent from the bottles to
the selected fire area. The upper
thrust reverser door has nine holes in
the front flange to allow the extin-
guishing agent to enter the area
between the upper thrust reverser
door and the duct assembly.
Pushing the BOTTLE ARMED
PUSH switchlight extinguishes its
respective light. An extinguished
light does not necessarily mean the
bottle contents have discharged; it
means only that the switchlight has
been pushed. The only way to
verify the bottle has discharged is to
observe the pressure gauge on the
bottle during post/preflight.
For example, if both BOTTLE
ARMED lights are pushed, the lights
extinguish and the bottles should
discharge. If for some reason the
ENGINE FIRE switchlight is pushed
to reset the system and then pushed
again, the BOTTLE ARMED PUSH
switchlights re-illuminate even
though the fire bottles are empty.
Portable Fire
Extinguishers
Two portable fire extinguishers are
mounted in red quick-release brack-
ets: one under the copilot's seat
(Fig-
ure 5D-6)
for easy access to the
crew in flight, and a second extin-
guisher in the passenger cabin
behind the aft left seat
(Figure 5D-
7),
either on the floor forward of the
aft divider, or mounted on the front
of the aft divider itself.
Each portable extinguisher is rated
for class B and C fires and contains
4.5 lbs of Halon 1211, which is
nitrogen-charged to 125 PSI.
