Ignition System
During the engine start cycle, the
ignition system provides high-
energy discharges for fuel/air mix-
ture ignition. The system consists of:

Ignition Exciter
n
Ignition Cables
n
Igniter Plugs.
During the engine start cycle, the
Hot Battery bus supplies power for
the left and right engine ignition sys-
tems. With the ignition switches or
engine anti-ice switches on, the
Right Crossover bus and the Left
Main Extension bus supply 28 VDC
to the left and right engine ignition
exciters through the LH and RH
IGNITION circuit breakers.
Ignition Exciters
The PW530A engine is equipped
with one exciter unit and two spark
igniters
(Figure 5L-10
)
.
The exciter
is a sealed unit securely mounted to
brackets at the 7 o'clock position on
the outer bypass duct.
The exciter is a capacitance dis-
charge unit that uses a step-up trans-
former to generate, and a capacitor to
store, a four joule charge at approxi-
mately 3,000 volts for the igniters.
The capacitor discharges automati-
cally. If the igniter becomes inopera-
tive or input voltage is switched off,
the system discharges.
Ignition Cables
High tension output cables carry the
electrical output from the exciter to
the igniter plugs. Each consists of an
electrical lead in a flexible metal
braiding.
Igniter Plugs
The igniter plugs are at the five and
seven o'clock positions and protrude
through the gas generator case into
the combustion chamber.
