within the touchdown zone of the
runway of the intended landing;
(2) The flight visibility is not less
than the visibility prescribed in the
standard instrument approach being
used; and
(3) Except for a Category II or Cate-
gory III approach where any neces-
sary visual reference requirements are
specified by the Administrator, at least
one of the following visual reference
for the intended runway is distinctly
visible and identifiable to the pilot:
(i) The approach light system, except
that the pilot may not descend below
100 ft above the touchdown zone ele-
vation using the approach lights as a
reference unless the red terminating
bars or the red side row bars are also
distinctly visible and identifiable.
(ii) The threshold.
(iii) The threshold markings.
(iv) The threshold lights.
(v) The runway end identifier lights.
(vi) The visual approach slope indi-
cator.
(vii) The touchdown zone or touch-
down zone markings.
(viii) The touchdown zone lights.
(ix) The runway or runway markings.
(x) The runway lights.
(d) Landing. No pilot operating an
aircraft, except a military aircraft of
the United States, may land that air-
craft when the flight visibility is less
than the visibility prescribed in the
standard instrument approach pro-
cedure being used.
Additional Instrument
Systems
The following additional equipment is
available on most aircraft and should
be set according to company SOP:
radio altimeter
terrain advisory voice encoding
altimeter
vertical navigation computer con-
troller (VNAV)
long-range navigation equipment.
Normal Descent
Condensation
Precautions
The defog fan should be in HI with
the foot warmers closed up to 15 min-
utes prior to descent. Closing the foot
warmers circulates dry, conditioned
air between the side windows to
inhibit condensation in these areas.
The HI position of the fan is acti-
vated prior to initiating descent and
if rapidly descending into an area of
anticipated high humidity after cold
soaking at altitude. Use windshield
bleed air to externally warm the
windshield in extreme conditions.
Airflow distribution should be
biased toward the cockpit for maxi-
mum defog capabilities.
Pressurization
After initiating descent, confirm that
the destination airport pressure alti-
tude plus 200 ft is set in the SET
ALT window dial of the controller;
this ensures cabin depressurization
prior to touchdown.
Continue to monitor the differential
pressure, cabin altitude, and cabin
vertical speed gauges throughout
descent. The most comfortable con-
dition occurs when cabin descent is
distributed over the majority of the
aircraft descent time.
