About the optical tools

Two USB optical accessories are available for the T-BERD 

⁄

 MTS 5800 and SC 4800/

4800P: 

•

Fiber Microscope
–

Inspect both the bulkhead (female) and patch cord (male) sides of fiber inter-
connect as well as optical devices located in hard-to-reach places (trans-
ceivers).

–

Inspect both simplex connectors.

–

Use with a comprehensive selection of precision FBPT tips.

•

Optical Power Meter
–

Takes power measurements for all single-mode and multi-mode connectors 
via USB 2.0 connection.

–

Measures optical power with multiple pre-calibrated wavelengths (850, 980, 
1300, 1310, 1490, 1550 and 1625 nm).

–

Integrates digital power measurements, fiber inspection, and analysis into a 
single, unified work sequence.

In addition to the two USB accessories, you can connect an optional 4100-Series 
OTDR module to the 5800 to support the installation, turn up, and troubleshooting of 
optical networks. For instructions on using the OTDR modules, refer to the

Inspecting fiber

The Viavi fiber microscope accessory is used to view a live video of a simplex fiber to 
determine if the fiber is clean. It can also capture a snapshot and provide pass/fail anal-
ysis. 

To inspect fiber

Connect the fiber microscope to a USB connector on the right side of the instru-
ment.
A MicroScope icon appears in the title bar.

NOTE:

The Microscope icon only appears if the microscope is connected.
