Testing Active Optical Cables and Direct Attach Copper cables using T-
BERD/MTS 5800-100G and 5800v2
An active optical cable (AOC) is a multimode fiberized cable with pluggable optic cages
such as QSFP or SFP, permanently mated to both ends.
Direct Attach Copper (DAC) is a similar device but with copper cables. These AOC/
DAC cables are used inside data centers to, for example, connect a TOR (Top of Rack)
switch to a Leaf/Spine. These cables may cause errors due to manufacturing defects
such as reversed polarities or potentially crushed or squeezed optical fibers. Errors can
be identified before cables are laid avoiding extra effort to replace the cable, or to
prevent discarding a good cable by mistake. The T-BERD/MTS 5800-100G and 5800v2
enable technicians to test such cables quickly and easily via a built-in script.
AOC and DAC cables testing includes the following features:
– Cable Test script built into the T-BERD/MTS 5800-100G or 5800v2
– Test reports capture the serial number of the cable tested, as well as the
setup and results
– Pass/fail results against adjustable bit error rate threshold
– Choice of five report file formats
– Available for tests at 10GigE LAN (for T-BERD/MTS 5800v2, 5800-100G, and
CSAM); 25GigE (for 5800-100G); 40GigE, 100GigE, and 100 GigE RS-FEC
(for CSAM and 5800-100G)
– User can save and reuse configuration files
Running the Optics Self-Test and Cable Test
To run the tests:
1 For the Cable Test, connect the AOC or DAC cable between 2 ports. For the
Optics Self-Test, connect an optical cable between the interface input and output
ports.
2 Use the Test Menu screen to select the Optics Self-Test or Cable Test (located
under it in the image below) application for the interface you are testing.
