Subtitle asset files are reel-based and their timing reference always starts at 00:00:00:00 regardless of where
the file is placed on the timeline. Subtitle spot times within each subtitle asset file (reel) are relative on the
begin timing of that reel, 00:00:00:00. This is in compliance with industry practice.
•
Subtitle event timing (timed-text or graphic overlay) defined in the subtitle asset file, is not editable using the
following VTP Editor commands and does have unintended consequences:
o
Trim In
The VTP Editor will give the appearance that the asset file has been shortened but in
fact that file will execute in its entirety when played. What is adjusted is the start of the
reel that will cause the system to create a new reel segment for the video and audio
assets when the timeline is packaged into DCP.
o
Trim Out
The VTP Editor will give the appearance that the asset file has been shortened but in
fact that file execute in its entirety when played.
o
Delete In and Out
This command should not be used to remove any timeline segment (including video and
audio assets) if subtitle track assets are present between the Mark In and Mark Out
position. The VTP Editor will give the appearance that the subtitle track file has been
split by the operation. However, both subtitle track files will execute in their entirety and
quite will likely overlay during playback.
o
Razor
The VTP Editor will give the appearance that the subtitle track file has been split by the
operation. However, both subtitle track files will execute in their entirety and quite will
likely overlay during playback.
o
Slip
The VTP Editor will give the appearance that start and end timing of the subtitle asset
has changed even though the asset hasn’t physically been moved. The Slip edit does
not affect the timing of the subtitle asset file in any.
•
QuVIS QuStudio should be used to transfer subtitle asset files to the VTP project directory for use within the
VTP Editor. This will ensure that timed-text, graphic (if used) and font files are placed in their proper location
prior to those assets being added to the Subtitle track of the VTP project.
•
Subtitle track assets (files) are added to the VTP timeline using the
Asset
Overlay
or
Insert
functions. When a
subtitle XML file is added to the VTP timeline, the start position of that file on the timeline is determine by either
the defined
Mark In
point or in its absence the current placement of the timeline cursor. Advanced insert
methods (3-point and 4-point edits) are ignored.
Note:
The VTP Editor will parse the subtitle XML file and determine its length based upon the last subtitle spot
location contained within the file. If the subtitle asset files length is longer than the video and audio reel it is
associated with, the subtitle file must be redone to ensure proper reel-based timing.
