Number Of Stop Bits
Number of Stop Bits refers to the number of bits placed at the end of each transmitted word
(byte) by the sending device. This number of bits indicates to the receiving device that the
word has been transmitted.
XON/XOFF Flow Controll
XON/XOFF Flow Control refers to a protocol that regulates the flow of data between a
computer and a serial device by means of the XON and XOFF signals from the receiving
device to the sending device:
Q
The XON signal means: Turn on the computer and start sending data.
Q
The XOFF signal means: Turn off the computer and stop sending data.
For example, in transmitting data between a computer and a printer, the computer sends data to
be printed at 9600 baud, which is several times faster than the printer can print. The computer
sends the data to be printed. Any data that cannot be printed immediately is stored temporarily
in the small buffer of the printer. When this buffer is full, the printer sends the XOFF signal to
the computer, telling it to stop sending data. But when the buffer is ready to receive again, the
printer sends the XON signal to the computer, telling it to resume sending data.
Word Length
Word Length refers to the number of bits in a transmitted word or byte.
