Connecting the A180 Support Management Station for LAN (Private
and Customer)
The Support Management Station (SMS) can be integrated into the customer’s LAN, so that it can be
accessed from the customer console or from a remote console device. In addition, the SMS is connected
directly to the SMS Guardian Service Processor (GSP) to support such functions as updating firmware and
running JTAG Utility for Scan Tests (JUST) software. The sections that follow explain how to make these
connections.
IMPORTANT
Please use the new JUST Exploration Tool described in Appendix H, “JUST Exploration Tool,”
on page 207 for running scan tests.
Setting Up the A180 SMS for Private LAN Access
A SMS is equipped with a LAN card that is specifically intended for use as a direct communications link with
the Superdome GSP. Superdome-related SMS functions, such as updating firmware and running JUST, are
performed over this LAN link. For this LAN port to work, the SMS must be powered on and the operating
system must be running.
To set up the SMS for private LAN access:
Step 1. Connect one end of the customer-supplied LAN cable to the RJ-45 connector labeled LAN 0
Private LAN in Figure F-2 on page 172.
Step 2. Connect the other end of the LAN cable to the right RJ-45 connector marked Private LAN at the
back of the SPU cabinet.
Setting Up the A180 SMS for Customer LAN Access
The procedure in this section describes how to connect a LAN cable to allow LAN access to the SMS to
perform functions such as JUST (scan) tests and firmware update. For this LAN port to work, the SMS must
be powered on and the operating system must be running.
To connect the SMS for LAN console access:
Step 1. Connect one end of the customer-supplied LAN cable to the RJ-45 connector labeled LAN 1
Customer LAN in Figure F-2 on page 172.
Step 2. Connect the other end of the LAN cable to the customer’s hub.
Setting the Private and Customer IP Addresses on the Support
Management Station
In a previous procedure, you set the IP address for WEB console access to the Support Management Station
(SMS). In this section you will set the IP address for the Private LAN connection to the Guardian Service
Processor (GSP) on the Superdome, and the IP address for customer LAN access to the SMS.
