Installing the A180 Support Management Station

This appendix contains information on how to install an A180 Support Management Station (SMS). Many of
the procedures that apply to the A500, which is described in Chapter 3, also apply to the A180. For your
convenience, those procedures have been repeated in this appendix.

This section describes the procedures to:

•

Rack the SMS and its related peripherals, connect a local serial display device (console), and install
appropriate cables.

•

Set up the SMS to run scan software, to run the Boot Chassis Code Decoder tool, and to update firmware.

IMPORTANT

Please use the new JUST Exploration Tool described in Appendix H, “JUST Exploration
Tool,” on page 207 for running scan tests.

•

Connect the customer’s LAN to the SMS.

Racking the A180 SMS and Peripherals

If you put the SMS and its peripherals in a rack, allow two EIA units for the A-Class server, the DVD player,
and the DDS tape drive.

To unpack and rack the SMS, follow the A-Class instructions that came with the server, or refer to the
following URL: http://class.hp.com/hpus/systems/#aclass.

Connecting SCSI Cables and Setting SCSI Addresses on the A180 SMS

After the SMS components have been removed from their packaging, and have either been placed in a rack or
stacked together on a table, the SCSI cables can be installed and the SCSI addresses can be set.

NOTE

Make sure all devices on the SCSI bus have a unique address and that the last device is
terminated. Refer to the documentation accompanying each device to learn where to place
terminators.

To connect the SMS peripherals and set SCSI addresses:

Step 1. Connect the cables between the SMS, DDS tape drive, and DVD.
