Section 4 Overall System Theory

Figure 4-10 Single Phase Power Supply Locations and Interconnects

Refer to the Overall System Block Diagram in the schematic package and Figure 4-11
for the following discussion. Each of the four power transformers has a single, center
tapped full wave rectified secondary. The center tap is the nominal 52Vdc output and is
filtered by a large choke and 3 large filter capacitors. The single phase supply is full
wave rectified giving a ripple frequency of 120Hz and therefore requires more filtering
than the 3-Phase supply. Each of the secondary windings has 4 pairs of output taps, each
of which are connected through an SCR to ground. The SCRs act as tap switches,
activating the tap which gives the appropriate DC voltage output, as rectifiers and as
switches to turn the power supply on and off. This gives a total of 8 SCRs per
secondary, but only 2 SCRs will be activated at any one time providing the ability to
regulate the output DC voltage by changing the transformer turns ratio. The 4 pairs of
secondary taps allow DC outputs of 48, 50, 52 and 54Vdc. The tap switching is
controlled by the Power Supply Controller boards.

The transformer assemblies are designated PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4. PS1 and PS2 supply
power for Z-Planes A and B (and IPA_AB) while PS3 and PS4 power the PAs on Z-
Planes C and D (and IPA_CD). Each power supply is connected to the same PAs as its
corresponding PA Controller. For example, PS1 powers the same PAs that are
controlled by PA Controller 1. These are listed in Table 4-1 at the end of this section.
