Frame Average Penetration (Penet.)
Description Averages color information from previous
frames with the current frame. Penetration can be increased by lowering
the operating frequency of the active
probe.
For reference, Color Flow Doppler
frequencies (with penetration On or Off)
are shown according to probe in Table 5–8
on
5–52.
Benefits Averages out 1 time events like noise
spikes. Allows for a slight increase in penetration
without changing gain or acoustic output.
Values Off, low, medium and high.

Affects on
Other Controls Trade off between frame rate and color
quality. As the color quality increases, the
frame rate decreases and as the frame
rate increases, the color quality decreases. Acoustic output, gain and TGC may be
able to be reduced due to increased
penetration.
Bioeffects
Decreasing the probe transmitting
frequency, without decreasing acoustic
output, tends to increase Mechanical and
Thermal Index values. However, improved
penetration should allow for decreasing
patient exposure time.
