F uel System

            Section 3

If E -1 0  gasoline absorbs enough moisture, it ca n suffer
phase separation.  The ethanol and water mixture will
fall out of suspension and co llect  in the lowest parts
of the fuel system.  The ethanol and water mixture

can  damage  engines,  clog  fuel  filters,  and  corrode

metal fuel system parts.  F uel tanks  with E -1 0
gasoline should always be ke pt as full as possible to
reduce  exposure to moisture from co ndensation and
humidity.

Conce ntrations of ethanol greater than 1 0 %  ca n
ch ange the physic al properties of some rubber and
plastic  fuel system parts such  as gaske ts, hoses,

tanks, and filters.  Regularly inspect all non metal fuel

system parts for signs of swelling or deterioration.  In
some extreme ca ses, rubber parts such  as hoses and
gaske ts c an act ually sweat liq uid gasoline.  B e alert
for the odor of gasoline or small droplets of gasoline
near these parts.

Always have fuel system repairs performed by a

qualified marine technician.
