Section 3 F uel System
Automotive gasoline has co ntained various oxygenated
hydroca rbon co mpounds as replace ments for lead
since . These compounds boost the octane rating
of gasoline. Two familiar co mpounds are M TB E and
ethanol. E thanol is now the most co mmon co mpound
since MTBE was identified as a serious polluter of ground
water.
Ethanol for gasoline is a highly refined grain alcohol
rated at about 2 0 0 proof. The U.S . E P A cu rrently allows
automotive gasoline to co ntain up to 1 0 % ethanol, by
volume. While E gasoline does not cause significant
problems in road vehicl es, it does req uire extra attention
when used in your boat.
F ollow these rules when using E- 10 gasoline in this
b oat:

E thanol is hygrosco pic, meaning that it attract s and
easily mixes with moisture. E -1 0 gasoline will co rrode
metal fuel system parts faster than gasoline without
ethanol. If you are switch ing to E -1 0 gasoline, it
ca n loosen sca le and deposits in older fuel systems.
Regularly inspect all fuel system co mponents and
fuel filters for signs of corrosion and particulate
co ntamination.
