Grounding and Bonding
e nitions
The terms grounding and bonding are often inco rrect ly
used interch angeably. They are different systems that
ca n work together to provide solutions to co mmon
problems and risks on the water.
B onding is the proce ss of co nnect ing various metal
co mponents in the boat to a co mmon elect rica l co ntact .
This helps to reduce the ch ance of rails and other metal
object s ca rrying dangerous elect rica l ch arges.
Grounding is defined as the method in which any
elect rica l potential is co nnect ed to the surrounding water
for the purpose of energy dissipation.
P roperly designed grounding and bonding systems
inco rporating zi nc or aluminum anodes and bronze
plates will also help co ntrol co rrosion of aluminum and
stainless steel parts.
