Working with IPMI Target Devices
An IPMI target device is a server containing one or more BMCs (Baseboard Management
Controllers) that are used to monitor internal sensor information such as temperature, fan speed and
battery voltage. The BMCs in IPMI target devices are added to your DSView 3 software system
using a DSI5100 IPMI proxy appliance, which provides a secure interface to all IPMI target
devices in your enterprise. The DSI5100 appliance is used to access, aggregate and report
information from sensors read by the BMCs.
The DSI5100 appliance supports IPMI 1.5. If the appliance is running firmware version 3.2 or later,
IPMI 2.0 is also supported.
Sensor information may be viewed either graphically using the IPMI Viewer window, or by
clicking on an IPMI target device in a Units View window.
DSI5100 Appliance BMCs
NOTE: You must have Configure Unit Settings rights to change DSI5100 appliance BMC settings. See About
Access Rights on page 120.
BMCs accessed by a DSI5100 appliance are managed using the Appliance BMC Ports window.
You may add or remove BMCs or change the name, IP address, or username and password of
a BMC.
Adding BMCs for use with a DSI5100 appliance
Using the IPMI BMC Wizard, you may:
• Add a single BMC to a new target device
• Add a single BMC to an existing target device
• Discover one or more BMCs (requires DSI5100 appliance firmware version 3.2.0.0 or higher)
To add a BMC:
1. In a Units View window (see Accessing Units View windows on page 88), click on the name of
a DSI5100 appliance.
2. Click Appliance Settings in the side navigation bar, and then click BMCs . The Appliance BMC
Ports window will open.
